AI Transformation at Telstra: Job Cuts and Efficiency Gains

Telstra's five-year plan aims to integrate AI to enhance service delivery while navigating workforce reductions.
Telstra, Australia’s leading telecommunications provider with a market capitalization of $54 billion, has outlined a transformative five-year strategy focused on the integration of artificial intelligence (AI) across its operations.

CEO Vicki Brady emphasized the urgency and potential of AI following her attendance at the Microsoft CEO Summit, stating, 'The pace and scale of change is just phenomenal… this is real now.' Central to this strategy is the concept of 'Agentic AI,' which encompasses AI systems designed to perform various functions autonomously with minimal oversight, such as cybersecurity measures and health management support.

Brady acknowledged the implications for workforce dynamics, reflecting on Telstra’s history of significant job cuts—most notably, during its T22 transformation initiative, which resulted in the departure of 8,000 employees.

Currently, Telstra employs approximately 32,000 personnel across various roles, from infrastructure maintenance to customer service.

However, when asked about the future composition of the workforce in 2030, Brady indicated uncertainty, stating, 'No one can predict exactly what our workforces will look like in 2030, but in our case, we believe our workforce will likely be smaller in 2030 than it is today.'

This sentiment mirrors a broader trend observed across the technology sector, where companies such as Microsoft and Canva have already begun restructuring their workforces in response to AI capabilities that can serve roles previously held by employees.

Industry leaders such as Janet Truncale, CEO of EY, have suggested the potential for growing businesses while maintaining smaller workforces, with Truncale stating, 'I like to think we can double in size with the workforce we have today.'

Telstra aims to leverage AI not only to enhance operational efficiency but also to address the increasing demands for digital services driven by augmented reality and live streaming applications.

The telecommunications industry faces pressures like increased competition and the need for substantial investment to upgrade infrastructure.

Currently, Telstra incurs costs of approximately $1.5 billion annually for network management and operations, alongside $1 billion for software engineering and IT. A significant portion of these costs—estimated at $2 billion each year—relates to customer engagement initiatives.

Brady noted that leveraging AI will be crucial for driving revenue growth while simultaneously controlling costs in a mature business landscape.

As part of this transformation, AI is already being deployed to optimize infrastructure maintenance and minimize manual processes inherent in network design.

The strategy aims to convert telecommunications from a simple utility provider to a dynamic service model that caters to unique consumer needs.

For instance, bespoke services could be developed to ensure seamless connectivity for businesses during peak operational times.

The implications of these changes include a potential transformation of job roles while simultaneously reshaping customer service offerings.

Companies may now offer personalized service packages informed by user behavior, creating opportunities to charge premium prices for tailored experiences.

However, the precise outcomes of these advancements remain ambiguous, as industry experts caution that the full ramifications of AI integration across sectors are still unfolding.
