Telstra, Australia’s leading telecommunications provider with a market capitalization of $54 billion, has outlined a transformative five-year strategy focused on the integration of artificial intelligence (AI) across its operations.

CEO Vicki Brady emphasized the urgency and potential of AI following her attendance at the Microsoft CEO Summit, stating, 'The pace and scale of change is just phenomenal… this is real now.' Central to this strategy is the concept of 'Agentic AI,' which encompasses AI systems designed to perform various functions autonomously with minimal oversight, such as cybersecurity measures and health management support.

Brady acknowledged the implications for workforce dynamics, reflecting on Telstra’s history of significant job cuts—most notably, during its T22 transformation initiative, which resulted in the departure of 8,000 employees.

Currently, Telstra employs approximately 32,000 personnel across various roles, from infrastructure maintenance to customer service.

However, when asked about the future composition of the workforce in 2030, Brady indicated uncertainty, stating, 'No one can predict exactly what our workforces will look like in 2030, but in our case, we believe our workforce will likely be smaller in 2030 than it is today.'
