Albanese and Malinauskas Unveil New Healthcare Funding in South Australia Ahead of 2025 Federal Election

Prime Minister Anthony Albanese pledges $150 million for a new healthcare facility in Boothby, amid ongoing challenges in the health sector.
Prime Minister Anthony Albanese is joining South Australian Premier Peter Malinauskas in Adelaide to announce an additional funding initiative aimed at bolstering healthcare services.

This event highlights a focus on health as a central theme in the lead-up to the 2025 federal election.

Albanese plans to allocate $150 million towards the construction of a new healthcare facility, the Flinders HealthCARE Centre, in the Boothby electorate.

This area is currently represented by Labor's Louise Miller-Frost, who is anticipated to face a competitive challenge from Liberal candidate Nicolle Flint, a former representative of the seat from 2016 to 2022.

The proposed Flinders HealthCARE Centre is projected to create an estimated 10,000 additional health appointments annually and is expected to support the graduation of 1,300 healthcare workers each year.

However, construction is not expected to commence until 2027, and the funding for this project will be included in the Australian Labor Party’s pre-election financial outlook, set to be released next week.

Healthcare has been a significant issue in South Australia, particularly following the Malinauskas government’s electoral success in 2022, which was largely driven by a campaign to address the state’s healthcare crisis, including urgent reforms to reduce ambulance ramping.

The federal Labor government has committed to a 15 percent increase in Commonwealth funding for public hospitals in South Australia for the upcoming year, amounting to $2.35 billion.

Albanese highlighted the ongoing need to reform the medical system, stating that solutions would not materialize immediately.

He noted the importance of addressing hospital funding, easing pressures on emergency departments, and mitigating general practitioner shortages while emphasizing the need for increased training for future doctors.

This announcement follows Albanese's visit to Flinders University, where he reaffirmed these commitments on Tuesday morning.
