Australia Launches Nationwide Recall of Alfalfa Sprouts After Unusual Salmonella Outbreak

Authorities link at least forty-four illnesses to contaminated sprouts and urge consumers to return affected products.
Australian food regulators have issued a nationwide recall of certain alfalfa sprout products after an outbreak of an unusual strain of salmonella left at least forty-four people ill.

The recall covers 125 gram packets of alfalfa sprouts produced by Parilla Fresh and sold under brand names including “Aussie Sprouts” and multiple “Hugo’s” variants, all carrying use-by dates up to and including twenty November 2025.

The affected items were distributed through major national retailers including Coles Group, Woolworths Group and IGA Supermarkets, and sold in New South Wales, Queensland, Victoria, South Australia, the Northern Territory and the Australian Capital Territory.

Among the confirmed cases, eighteen were in New South Wales, nine in Victoria and fifteen in Queensland.

In each instance the pathogen has been identified as a rare strain of salmonella, prompting a joint investigation by state and federal food-safety authorities.

Health officials warned that anyone who purchased the affected packets should not consume them and should return them for a full refund.

Consumers who believe they have eaten the sprouts and are experiencing symptoms—including headache, fever, stomach cramps, diarrhoea, nausea and vomiting—are advised to seek medical advice.

The incubation period for salmonella can range from six to seventy-two hours after exposure and the illness typically lasts four to seven days, although vulnerable groups such as infants, the elderly and people with weakened immune systems may face more severe outcomes, including hospitalisation.

Parilla Fresh stated that it had voluntarily recalled the affected products while investigations continue and is cooperating fully with regulators to determine how the contamination occurred.

The outbreak has renewed scrutiny of fresh-produce safety in Australia, particularly the risk posed by raw sprouts, which grow under warm and humid conditions that favour bacterial growth.

Authorities in New South Wales confirmed they are working with the Department of Primary Industries and regional health agencies to trace the supply chain and identify the contamination source.

This recall underscores the fragility of food-supply safety even in regulated markets and highlights the importance of rapid response when unusual pathogens emerge.

The recall alert will remain in effect until officials declare the source contained and retailers have removed all affected stock from sale.

In the meantime, the public is urged to check their fridges and disposal appropriately any affected packets.
