Canberra Police Investigate Series of Targeted Shootings

Multiple injuries reported and a dog killed in a spate of gunfire incidents across the Australian Capital Territory.
Canberra's police department is investigating a disturbing series of shootings that have resulted in multiple injuries and the death of a pet dog over the past week.

Four distinct shooting incidents have been reported in the Australian Capital Territory (ACT) within a six-day period, prompting concerns over public safety and targeted violence.

Detective Acting Inspector Mark Battye of ACT Policing's Major Crime unit stated that investigators have reason to believe the victims were specifically chosen by the assailants for undisclosed reasons.

"We are yet to get to the bottom of the victims' accounts, which is likely due to some suffering injuries that required medical treatment and pain relief," Battye commented during a press briefing.

He noted that some victims have been reluctant to share information with the authorities.

In relation to these incidents, police are actively searching for three unidentified men, who reportedly concealed their identities during the shootings.

Battye indicated that one of them was armed with a long-arm rifle.

He expressed concern that the situation could escalate dangerously if the suspects are not apprehended swiftly.

The incidents began on March 27, when a gun was discharged within a residence in Greenway, an area located south of Canberra, injuring an individual from a ricochet.

Subsequently, on March 28, a shooting occurred at a property in Downer in Canberra's inner north, during which a dog was killed.

On March 29, authorities received reports of a man being shot in Watson, a suburb neighboring Downer.

The victim sustained a serious torso injury and was later hospitalized, necessitating surgical intervention.

The suspected shooters reportedly fled the scene in a dark-colored vehicle, identified as an Audi.

Notably, the same residence in Watson had previously been targeted on March 25, according to police reports.

The police believe that these shootings are interconnected, leading to the execution of search warrants in the suburbs of Belconnen and Watson on March 30. In the course of these searches, one person was taken into custody in Fyshwick as part of the ongoing investigation.

Law enforcement officials continue to urge anyone with information regarding these incidents to assist by contacting them or reaching out to Crime Stoppers at 1800 333 000.
