China’s electric vehicle manufacturer NIO has confirmed plans to enter the Australian and New Zealand markets this year, advancing a broader international expansion strategy built around right-hand-drive vehicles and strategic local partnerships.

The company, which has already certified its compact Firefly EV under Australian Design Rules and is conducting required safety testing locally, anticipates formal market entry once final distributor agreements are in place.

NIO’s co-founder and president, Lihong Qin, said the company has been in active discussions with prospective dealer partners in both countries, underscoring Canberra and Wellington as priority destinations in its 2026 rollout.

Statements from the company indicate that Australia is among several right-hand-drive markets NIO is targeting for expansion alongside Thailand and the United Kingdom.

The initial launch is expected to focus on the Firefly — a compact, right-hand-drive hatchback that has already completed local certification and been spotted undertaking road validation in Victoria.

NIO officials have emphasised that ongoing crash and safety assessments in Australia are essential to securing regulatory approval ahead of showroom availability.

While specific timing and pricing have yet to be formally announced, industry sources anticipate that the Firefly, and potentially other models, will arrive in showrooms later this year, offering Australian and New Zealand consumers an alternative to established electric vehicle brands.

The company’s global push builds on earlier rollouts in Europe and reflects NIO’s response to rising EV demand worldwide.
