The Australian winger, missing since the 2023 World Cup, could return under new coach Joe Montemurro.
Cortnee Vine, renowned for her pivotal role in Australia’s dramatic penalty shootout victory over France in the 2023 FIFA Women's World Cup, may be on the verge of a return to the Matildas squad, according to head coach Joe Montemurro.
Vine, who last represented Australia at the Paris Olympics, has been absent from international play due to personal reasons, injuries, and challenges encountered in the National Women’s Soccer League (NWSL) with North Carolina Courage.
Montemurro acknowledged Vine’s potential for inclusion, stating, "Cortnee's definitely on the radar.
We'll get to the heart of getting her back in the fray and hopefully we can build her into the Asian Cup also." This statement was made in advance of upcoming friendlies against Slovenia and Panama, scheduled to take place in Perth.
The Matildas are currently in a period of transition, with various players demonstrating their capabilities during recent matches.
Notably, Amy Sayer contributed significantly by scoring two goals in a dominant 4-1 win over Argentina, while Kahli
Johnson made her mark with a goal and an assist.
Additionally, Holly McNamara, the A-League Women Golden Boot winner, has been noted for her strong performances.
Montemurro reflected on the changes within the squad, acknowledging the need to consider the future of the team amidst discussions regarding the aging roster.
He noted the assistance of former interim coach Tom Sermanni in scouting and developing talent, which has provided Montemurro with valuable insights into the players' levels of performance.
This preparatory work is expected to facilitate Montemurro's efforts as he assumes leadership of the Matildas leading into the upcoming international fixtures.
