Fatal Shark Attacks in Streaky Bay Spark Community Concerns and Call for Mitigation Strategies

Local council's report outlines measures in response to recent fatalities attributed to shark encounters.
The Streaky Bay community is grappling with the aftermath of two recent fatal shark attacks, most notably the tragic death of 28-year-old Lance Appleby, who was attacked at Granites Beach.

In response, Surf Life Saving South Australia (SLSSA) and the local council have released a detailed report containing 28 recommendations aimed at enhancing shark mitigation efforts in the area.

The report, issued two months following Apple's death, highlights concerns surrounding human activities such as cage diving and jet-skiing that may attract sharks, potentially contributing to their presence in local waters.

Previous mitigation efforts by the community included basic measures like cardboard signs and low-cost air horns; however, the current focus has shifted to more substantial interventions, including a proposal to impose fishing restrictions in designated surf zones.

Human activities were cited as possible contributors to alterations in shark behavior, with local residents expressing apprehension regarding various recreational practices, including cray fishing and shark sighting tours.

The recent report indicated that jet-skis had been used in waters prior to both fatal attacks, noting that the last incident occurred merely hours after such activities took place.

Research has previously suggested that certain tourism practices may inadvertently condition sharks to associate human presence with food.

The report also raised concerns about fishing practices, particularly the placement of cray pots near reef breaks at Granites Beach.

This has prompted discussions on temporarily banning fishing in areas where fatal encounters have occurred.

Local community members, including Appleby's father, indicated that the presence of fishing gear might be attracting sharks closer to shore.

Communication challenges were identified as a critical issue in emergency response scenarios, specifically the inadequacy of mobile phone coverage around key access points.

This lack of reliable communication was noted as a barrier to effective coordination during emergencies, potentially delaying the response of emergency services.

To address these communication deficiencies, the report recommends that the state government conduct a feasibility study focused on improving mobile coverage in priority locations, utilizing appropriate technology to enhance emergency preparedness.

The Mayor of Streaky Bay, Travis Barber, articulated the significant impact of the shark attacks on the local community, indicating that residents are increasingly hesitant to enter the water, thereby affecting tourism.

He emphasized the necessity of effective shark mitigation measures to restore public confidence in coastal safety.

The Streaky Bay council is seeking further support from the state government as it considers implementing the report’s recommendations.

Recently, $500,000 in funding was announced by the Minister for Primary Industries and Regional Development aimed at facilitating coastal risk assessments, which will also support enhancements such as signage and the provision of trauma kits and drones by Surf Life Saving SA.

In the context of broader measures, the New South Wales government has allocated $85 million for shark mitigation efforts from 2022 to 2026, while Western Australia has earmarked $17 million in its budget for the upcoming fiscal year focused on similar initiatives.

Meanwhile, the South Australian government remains committed to educating communities about ocean safety and risks associated with shark encounters.
