Flood Alerts Extended as Queensland Braces for More Rain

Flood Alerts Extended as Queensland Braces for More Rain

Ex-tropical cyclone Dianne expected to exacerbate flooding across western and central Queensland.
Queensland's flood situation has escalated dramatically as meteorological authorities extend flood alerts across more than 3,000 kilometers.

The Bureau of Meteorology has warned of further rain from the remnants of ex-tropical cyclone Dianne, anticipating falls of 50mm or more as the system traverses the state in the coming days.

Senior meteorologist Angus Hines stated that flooding remains significantly severe in central and western Queensland and may persist for days and weeks.

Flooding has become widespread, impacting areas extending into the Northern Territory and northern New South Wales, as data from satellite imagery illustrates.

In eastern Queensland, the Mary and Noosa rivers are also experiencing flooding; however, water levels are reportedly receding.

Rainfall measurements recorded yesterday showed localized accumulations of between 50mm to 80mm stretching from the Sunshine Coast to Noosa.

Hines noted that the rapid movement of cyclone Dianne across Queensland, expected to move from west to east within 24 hours, brings a mixed forecast.

Alongside heavy rainfall, damaging wind gusts are also anticipated from the cyclone remnants.

With the ground already saturated, all impending rainfall is likely to flow directly into rivers, exacerbating the flooding situation.

This is particularly concerning for western and central Queensland where river levels are expected to remain significantly elevated.

A major flood disaster has been declared in Queensland, with authorities expressing concerns over significant agricultural losses and damage to critical infrastructure, including homes, farm structures, fences, and machinery across a region larger than several European nations.

The Australian military has been deployed to assist in the response efforts as local graziers monitor the unyielding floodwaters.

In the town of Eromanga, known for being the furthest from the ocean in Australia, approximately 300mm of rain fell over a three-day period, leading to extensive flooding.

More than 100 homes have been inundated across western Queensland, necessitating airlift operations for dozens of residents as the emergency status escalates.

Efforts to construct levee walls in the town of Thargomindah met with limited success, as floodwaters breached the barriers in two locations over the weekend, although it is believed these measures have mitigated the worst effects of flooding.

Reports also indicate that Jundah recorded unprecedented flood levels last Friday.

Communities in the region are facing potential isolation for an extended period due to the ongoing flooding.
