Australia’s government has confirmed the presence of the highly pathogenic H5 bird flu virus in wildlife on Heard Island, a remote sub-Antarctic territory — a historic first for Australian territory.

The virus was detected in samples collected from dead southern elephant seals after scientists observed an unusually high mortality rate during a recent research voyage.

Testing by the CSIRO’s Australian Centre for Disease Preparedness identified the H5N1 clade 2.3.4.4b virus in the seal samples.

Government authorities emphasise that while Australia’s overall H5-free status for the mainland remains, the confirmation on Heard Island highlights the need for continued vigilance and readiness.

Heard Island lies more than 4,000 kilometres southwest of Perth and roughly 1,700 kilometres north of Antarctica.

Its isolation has long shielded the continent from outbreaks, but the island’s proximity relative to other sub-Antarctic sites — where H5 outbreaks have already occurred — made it vulnerable.

Officials from the Ministries of Agriculture, Fisheries and Forestry, and Environment and Water stated that the detection did not “substantially increase” the immediate risk of incursion onto the mainland.

Nonetheless, the government has committed more than A$100 million to strengthen national preparedness, including rapid-response equipment across all states and territories.

A follow-up scientific expedition to Heard and nearby McDonald Islands is scheduled to begin in late December and continue into early 2026. Researchers plan further wildlife health assessments to gauge the broader ecological impact.

Conservation groups warn that the arrival of H5 on Australian territory marks the end of a long-standing window for preparation.

They urge a coordinated “one-health” approach to safeguard vulnerable species, from penguins and seabirds to marine mammals.

The detection underscores the delicate balance of biosecurity, biodiversity, and national readiness in the face of a virus rapidly altering ecosystems globally.
