NSW Police Launch Operation to Combat Youth Crime Linked to Social Media

NSW Police Launch Operation to Combat Youth Crime Linked to Social Media

New initiative aims to address the rise of juvenile crime and its social media drivers, targeting ringleaders and repeat offenders.
New South Wales (NSW) Police have announced a major crackdown on youth crime, with a focus on juvenile ringleaders and repeat offenders, following an alarming rise in serious offenses among children as young as 10. NSW Police Commissioner Karen Webb emphasized the role of social media in fostering a competitive environment where children engage in risky behaviors to gain online notoriety.

During her announcement, Webb noted that groups of children were motivated by the desire to outdo one another, leading to increasingly violent crimes, including car thefts and aggravated break-ins.

"It’s just about the excitement, the boasting, outdoing each other… competing to see who can steal the fastest, best car," she stated.

The emergence of social media trends, such as the hashtag “Creepin While Ya Sleepin,” has further popularized these dangerous activities.

Offenders post evidence of their crimes online, including photographs of stolen vehicles and weapons, contributing to an escalating cycle of juvenile delinquency.

The operation, named Operation Soteria, will deploy 80 officers across nine key areas, including Dubbo, Moree, Tamworth, and Newcastle, to conduct random patrols aimed at reducing violence among offenders aged 11 to 16. Webb highlighted the importance of targeting ringleaders who recruit younger children for illegal activities, leveraging their lower likelihood of facing significant penalties.

Reports indicate some offenders reoffend shortly after release from custody, with some as young as ten being involved in criminal acts.

For instance, a recent case involved a five-year-old in a break-and-enter incident in Moree.

Concern over the impact of this trend has led to the introduction of stricter legislation.

Under new laws enacted a year ago, known as the "post and boast" laws, individuals who advertise their criminal activity on social media face harsher penalties.

Since its inception, 53 individuals have been charged, including 27 minors.

A notable case under these laws involved a 16-year-old sentenced to two years after stealing a luxury vehicle and posting about the incident on Snapchat.

Data from the Bureau of Crime Statistics and Research indicates that while the total number of young people charged remained stable over the past decade, there is a notable increase in charges related to specific offenses, including break and enter, weapon possession, and non-domestic violence assaults for the year leading to December 2024.

Commissioner Webb, the first female to hold this position, has focused on improving police culture and responding effectively to issues surrounding juvenile crime.

Her recent initiatives include an independent review of police culture and reforms aimed at increasing diversity within the force.

Webb has also made efforts to enhance workplace conditions for officers, particularly signaling support for female staff, evident through changes to uniform regulations that promote gender equality in the workplace.

As Operation Soteria unfolds, police will monitor social media platforms to identify at-risk youth engaging in or promoting criminal behavior, aiming ultimately to shield communities from the rising tide of youth-related offenses.
