Queensland Expands 'Adult Crime, Adult Time' Laws with New Offences

Thirteen new offences to be included in legislation addressing youth crime in Queensland.
The Premier of Queensland, David Crisafulli, announced in parliament on Tuesday that additional offences will be incorporated into the state's 'adult crime, adult time' laws.

This legislative initiative is aimed at imposing adult-style sentences on young offenders.

The original legislation specified thirteen offences, including murder, manslaughter, grievous bodily harm, robbery, burglary, and dangerous operation of a motor vehicle.

Recent community outrage was sparked by the alleged stabbing of a supermarket worker by a 10-year-old boy in January, which highlighted the exclusion of attempted murder from the original list of offences.

In response to public concern, new offences being added include rape, attempted murder, aggravated robbery, torture, and arson.

Crisafulli expressed confidence in the efficacy of these reforms while acknowledging the high rate of recidivism among young offenders.

He indicated that the legislation would be accompanied by enhanced early intervention and rehabilitation initiatives.

Youth Justice Minister Laura Gerber mentioned that experts had recommended the addition of another twenty offences, with ongoing considerations for further inclusions.

The government's amendments will increase the total number of offences covered by the 'adult crime, adult time' provisions to 33. In a related development, Police Minister Dan Purdie highlighted a forthcoming crackdown on young offenders involved in incidents where police vehicles were rammed, a crime he referred to as unique to Queensland.

Purdie detailed that there had been 53 instances over the past year and suggested a proposed maximum jail term of 14 years for those convicted of such actions.

He stated his commitment to pursuing stricter enforcement of laws concerning attacks on police vehicles and anticipated that the parliamentary amendments would be submitted to a committee for further examination.
