Acciona and ACS Formalise Major $4 Billion-Plus Railway Contract for Queensland’s Faster Rail Project

Acciona and ACS Formalise Major $4 Billion-Plus Railway Contract for Queensland’s Faster Rail Project

Spanish and Australian firms sign one of the country’s largest rail infrastructure contracts to expand capacity ahead of Brisbane’s 2032 Olympics
Acciona and the Australian arm of ACS have formalised a contract worth more than 5.75 billion Australian dollars—equivalent to over four billion US dollars—to design and construct the principal portion of the Logan and Gold Coast Faster Rail project in Queensland, marking a significant advance in Australia’s major transport infrastructure developments.

The agreement, now officially signed by partners working under the ActivUs Alliance, brings together Acciona, ACS’s subsidiaries CPB Contractors and UGL, and partners SMEC and WSP to deliver a transformative upgrade to one of the nation’s key commuter rail corridors.

The Logan and Gold Coast corridor, spanning about twenty kilometres between Kuraby and Beenleigh in south-east Queensland, faces increasing travel demand as the region’s population grows.

Under the contract, the rail line will be expanded from two tracks to four, enabling significantly more frequent and reliable services between Brisbane and the Gold Coast.

The project scope also includes modernising existing stations, enhancing accessibility with upgraded facilities and park-and-ride precincts, removing level crossings to improve safety and traffic flow, and upgrading signalling and control systems to support high-capacity operations.

The deal was originally awarded in April 2025 but has now been formally executed, allowing preparatory works to proceed.

Early activities include detailed ground investigations and station design work, with main construction expected to commence later in 2026. Queensland Rail and the Queensland Department of Transport and Main Roads are working closely with the ActivUs Alliance throughout the planning and delivery phases.

The infrastructure investment is a key component of Queensland’s long-term transport strategy, providing capacity enhancements ahead of the Brisbane 2032 Olympic and Paralympic Games and supporting the state’s sustainable growth.

Officials from both the government and the consortium have emphasised the broader economic and social benefits of the upgrade, including reduced congestion, improved commuter experience and enhanced connections for pedestrians and cyclists along the rail corridor.

As the project moves into its construction phase, it underscores Australia’s commitment to expanding its rail network and delivering high-impact public transport solutions in rapidly growing urban regions.
