Australia Post Reintroduces Weekend Parcel Delivery Ahead of Holiday Season

The national postal operator expands service hours to meet rising online-shopping demand ahead of Christmas
Australia’s national postal service has announced the re-introduction of temporary weekend parcel deliveries across all metropolitan capitals and select regional cities and towns, beginning this Saturday.

In response to a surge in online shopping, driven by early Black Friday and Cyber Monday deals, the expanded delivery service is designed to ensure that parcels sent now have the best chance of arriving in time for the Christmas season.

In addition to weekend deliveries, the operator has hired thousands of temporary staff, extended operating hours at more than three hundred Post Office locations and expanded its network of self-service parcel lockers, including 24/7 access in major cities, to offer greater flexibility to customers.

The executive general manager for parcel, post and e-commerce services reported that last year the company delivered nearly 103 million parcels in the lead-up to Christmas and anticipates similar volumes this year.

The move comes as e-commerce continues its strong growth.

Australian online retail spending reached A$20.7 billion (approximately US$13.4 billion) in the July-September quarter, up 15 per cent year-on-year and 6.2 per cent sequentially, setting the stage for a major sales and delivery surge through the remainder of the year.

Consumer-survey data show more than half of online buyers expect parcel arrivals within two to four days, and many plan to shop at least three to four weeks ahead of Christmas to avoid delivery delays.

The postal operator is urging consumers to take advantage of the expanded weekend delivery services and to consider alternative collection methods such as in-store or locker pickup.

This reflects broader consumer behaviour: fifty-three per cent of survey respondents said they were willing to use in-store pickup, and forty-two per cent preferred locker pickup to save time or avoid extra fees.

With the deliveries expected to intensify, the company is closely monitoring demand and states that weekend delivery services will remain in place up until Christmas — subject to volumes and operational capacity.

Australians are thus being offered more convenient shipping and collection options than ever, as the national postal operator seeks to ensure the holiday-season surge is managed smoothly and promptly.
