The commission is tasked with examining the nature, drivers and prevalence of antisemitism in Australia, assessing law enforcement and intelligence responses, and recommending measures to strengthen social unity and prevent future violence.

The inquiry will be led by former High Court Justice Virginia Bell and is due to deliver a final report by December fourteenth, 2026. It has broad terms of reference that encompass not only the specific circumstances surrounding the Bondi Beach attack but the wider context of antisemitism, including institutional responses and community cohesion.

The government has signalled that testimony can be compelled and that the commission will engage with communities, civil society and law enforcement across all states and territories.

The decision to establish a royal commission followed growing calls from Jewish communal organisations, business leaders representing Australia’s largest employers, former judges, senior legal figures and human rights advocates seeking a federal-level inquiry with the highest scope and authority.
