Australia’s vocational education regulator has cancelled qualifications held by at least thirty thousand graduates over the past year after uncovering widespread failures in training and assessment standards across several registered providers.

Since late 2024, the Australian Skills Quality Authority (ASQA) has revoked the registration of eleven organisations and voided diplomas, certificates and statements of attainment across key sectors including early childhood education, aged care, disability support, community services, first aid and construction, with some students paying as much as twenty thousand dollars for their courses.

ASQA confirmed that a further four providers have been deregistered, though their former students have not yet been informed of potential cancellations while investigations continue.

The regulator said more than one hundred and forty-four training organisations remain under active enforcement review for serious compliance concerns.

Among the largest cases, more than seven thousand three hundred graduates had qualifications voided from Luvium, trading as Australia Education & Career College, while IIET accounted for six thousand eight hundred cancellations.

Other organisations with significant numbers included SPES Education with over four thousand two hundred voided certificates, Arizona College with three thousand five hundred, and Gills College with more than three thousand three hundred affected graduates.

ASQA said it is still evaluating the legitimacy of some additional qualifications.

The crackdown follows federal funding of thirty-seven point eight million dollars aimed at strengthening vocational education oversight, including the creation of a dedicated integrity unit and a national tip-off line.

Since 2024, nearly half of more than three thousand submissions have involved providers serving international students, even though they represent only one-fifth of the sector.

Despite this, only two of the eleven cancelled providers were registered to deliver courses to overseas students.

Some students have sought formal review of cancellations.

Two graduates from Gills College, whose qualifications in kitchen management and ageing support were revoked after the provider failed to deliver required training, appealed to the administrative review tribunal.

Both challenges were rejected, with the tribunal noting that those working in aged-care roles support highly vulnerable people and must hold valid, properly assessed qualifications.

Sector experts warn that while strong enforcement is broadly welcomed, the scale of student impact marks an escalation in regulatory intervention.

Independent specialists argue that affected graduates should be offered opportunities to prove their competency before certifications are withdrawn.

ASQA maintains that individuals can respond before final decisions on cancellations are made and that state and territory consumer agencies can assist with refund claims.

New national standards for training organisations, described by ASQA as the most significant reform in its history, came into effect in July.

They impose stricter requirements on assessors, stronger compliance obligations and greater engagement with industry, signalling a shift toward more robust accountability mechanisms across the vocational education system.
