Australian and Philippine authorities have concluded that the two men accused of carrying out the deadly mass shooting at Bondi Beach in Sydney did not receive formal terrorist training abroad, despite earlier speculation about their month-long stay in the southern Philippines.

The attack on December 14, which targeted a Hanukkah celebration and left fifteen people dead, is now believed to have been conducted independently by the father-son duo without direction from recognised militant groups.

Australian Federal Police Commissioner Krissy Barrett said investigators found no evidence indicating that the suspects, identified as Sajid and Naveed Akram, underwent any military-style training or logistical preparation during their visit to Davao City on the island of Mindanao.

Officials from the Philippines’ National Security Adviser echoed this assessment, noting that the duration and nature of the pair’s stay did not substantiate claims of organised militant training.

This finding directly counters earlier unconfirmed reports suggesting that the accused had sought extremist instruction while abroad.

The investigation remains active, with law enforcement continuing to piece together the motivations and planning behind the attack.

Naveed Akram, who was wounded and later detained by police, faces multiple charges including murder, terrorism and explosives offences.

His father, Sajid Akram, was killed by officers at the scene.

Australian authorities have emphasised that while there is no evidence of direct overseas terrorist training, the influence of extremist ideology remains a focus of ongoing inquiry.
