Dutton Unveils Energy Price Reduction Plan Ahead of Australian Elections

Dutton Unveils Energy Price Reduction Plan Ahead of Australian Elections

The Opposition Leader pledges significant cuts to household energy bills and industrial gas prices if elected.
Opposition Leader Peter Dutton has pledged to reduce household energy bills by 3 percent and cut gas prices for large industrial users by 15 percent if he secures victory in the upcoming Australian federal elections.

The Coalition has presented detailed modelling on its national gas plan that aims to keep Australian gas reserves onshore, a proposal outlined during Dutton’s recent budget-in-reply speech.

Dutton has frequently criticized Prime Minister Anthony Albanese for failing to deliver on his commitment to lower power bills by $275 and aims to shift the debate towards the cost of living.

The opposition describes this initiative as its most significant cost-of-living campaign strategy to date.

According to analysis from Frontier Economics, Dutton claims that his plan could lead to a 23 percent reduction in wholesale gas prices, which in turn would diminish residential electricity costs by 3 percent.

The modelling forecasts an 8 percent decrease in wholesale electricity prices, a 7 percent reduction for household gas prices, and a 15 percent decrease for large industrial users, such as smelters.

A 3 percent reduction in electricity bills translates to an approximate saving of $60 for the average electricity bill, which stands at $2100 for households without solar panels or battery systems.

The Coalition has yet to establish a specific timeframe for these cuts, indicating that the gas reservation scheme will take time to implement, with anticipated reductions taking effect over two years.

Labor representatives and certain experts have criticized Dutton's gas reservation policy, arguing that it lacks detailed specifications.

Dutton counters their concerns, asserting that his strategy to retain gas for domestic use is appropriate and necessary, receiving backing from several left-leaning think tanks and unions.

He stated, "Our policy will be a game changer because we can then see the cost and therefore price of electricity, construction, food prices and many other goods start to come down."

Dutton emphasized the critical role of gas in the nation’s energy future, arguing that maintaining more Australian gas in domestic markets will decrease gas prices by 15 percent.

The conversation over electricity prices is pivotal in determining public trust in leadership regarding economic management, particularly as Dutton's approval ratings have faced challenges.

The announcement comes amid warnings from energy officials about an impending gas shortage in south-eastern Australia within the next three years.

Gas is integral to power generation, cooking, heating, and manufacturing sectors.

Current supplies from offshore fields in Bass Strait, vital for Victoria and New South Wales, are quickly depleting without new projects in development.

Dutton's ambition includes establishing a domestic gas reserve which would impose charges on a segment of exports, compelling gas companies to allocate a portion of their supply for local demand.

His strategy aims to reduce wholesale gas prices from $14 to $10 per gigajoule, facilitating an additional annual 50 to 100 petajoules of gas reserved for local consumption.

Industry responses have raised concerns regarding the potential negative impacts on investment in new gas projects, as gas exporters primarily cater to international markets while also supporting domestic needs.

Frontier Economics' modeller Danny Price has indicated that the proposed measures could effectively decouple Australian gas prices from more elevated international benchmarks.
