Ex-tropical cyclone Zelia has caused extensive damage in Western Australia's Pilbara region after making landfall as a category four system on Friday.

The cyclone struck near the De Grey River, approximately 54 kilometers northeast of Port Hedland, resulting in over 300 millimeters of rain within a 24-hour period leading to evacuations and significant property damage.

The Carlindie station homestead, located about 75 kilometers southeast of Port Hedland, suffered severe structural damage, with its roof ripped off and essential machinery destroyed.

Despite the extensive damage, station manager Terry Butler-Blaxell reported that there have been no injuries among the residents, who remain in good spirits amid the circumstances.

Western Australia Premier Roger Cook has acknowledged the cyclone's impact on pastoral stations, with significant destruction reported.

Flooding has emerged as the primary concern as rivers swell from heavy rains.

Emergency Services have confirmed major flooding in the De Grey River Catchment, and warnings for potential flash floods remain in effect for the surrounding areas.

Evacuations have been executed for remote communities like Warralong and Gooda Binya, where residents described terrifying conditions as trees fell and water levels rose.

Community leader Clarrie Robinson noted that although no houses were damaged in Warralong, the risk of flooding led to the urgent evacuation of local families.

Port Hedland, a key mining and shipping hub, appeared to have avoided the worst of the cyclone's winds and damage, though reports indicate that streets were flooded and trees had been uprooted.

Local resident Chris Ward expressed relief as he assessed the situation, confirming that no catastrophic damage occurred at his home.

Despite the lower levels of damage in Port Hedland, minor flooding occurred at the local airport, which has since reopened.

Emergency services continue to assess road conditions throughout the Pilbara after the cyclone forced extensive closures.

Authorities are closely monitoring river levels, with records indicating that the Upper North Pole gauge recorded 278mm of rainfall in just 18 hours, an unprecedented occurrence for the region.

Emergency services received numerous requests for assistance as residents navigated the aftermath of the cyclone.

The Bureau of Meteorology has downgraded Zelia to a tropical low, but heavy rainfall is expected to persist as the system tracks south.

Flood watches remain in place for various rivers and communities throughout northern Western Australia.
