Iranian Australians have reacted with a complex and deeply emotional mixture of joy, grief and apprehensive optimism in the wake of joint United States and Israeli airstrikes on Iran that reportedly killed Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei.

Members of the Iranian diaspora in cities such as Melbourne, Sydney and Canberra gathered in public spaces to express relief at the death of a long-standing authoritarian figure while acknowledging the deep sorrow at the human cost of the strikes and the continued violence unfolding in the region.

Many in the community, particularly those who fled persecution under Iran’s theocratic regime, described the moment as bittersweet, reflecting on decades of repression and violence that they and their families endured.

Sahar Gholizadeh, speaking from Melbourne, said her immediate reaction was one of emotional release — crying for lost lives and for what she called a "big moment" in the long struggle against what she described as oppressive governance.

The celebrations were often thoughtful and solemn, with diaspora members praying for a free and peaceful Iran even as they voiced cautious hope that the event might catalyse meaningful political change.

At the same time, leaders of Iranian-Australian organisations conveyed concern about the broader context of ongoing airstrikes, internet shutdowns in Iran, and reports of civilian casualties.

Suren Edgar, vice-president of the Australia Iranian Community Alliance, noted the psychological strain of uncertain communication with loved ones still in Iran, saying that silence from family members could be distressing.

Kambiz Razmara of the Australian-Iranian Society of Victoria described a sense of "quiet anticipation" within the community, emphasising hope for democratic reform even as uncertainty looms.

Public gatherings often blended cultural expression with political sentiment, with some demonstrators carrying pre-revolution Iranian flags alongside Australian, U.S. and Israeli flags, and calling for a secular, democratic republic.

Others maintained a sober focus on the humanitarian dimensions of the conflict, stressing the need to ensure civilian safety and the protection of human rights amid military actions.

The reactions among Iranian Australians mirror a broader pattern of diaspora responses globally, where feelings of relief at the reported death of Iran’s long-time leader are tempered by anxiety over the trajectory of the conflict, the risk of wider escalation, and the fate of those still living under siege.

As the situation continues to develop, Iranian Australians say they will keep advocating for both peace and fundamental freedoms for the people of Iran, hoping that the events of recent days might open a path toward political transformation and security for families separated by distance and war.
