Microsoft has announced a landmark investment of A$25 billion to expand artificial intelligence infrastructure, cybersecurity capabilities, and digital skills across Australia, marking the largest commitment in the company’s history in the country.

The multi-year initiative, set to run through 2029, will significantly scale up Microsoft’s cloud and AI computing capacity, including the expansion of advanced supercomputing systems and deployment of next-generation processors.

The investment is expected to increase the company’s AI and cloud footprint in Australia by more than 140 percent, reflecting rapidly growing demand for high-performance computing and data services.

The announcement was made during a visit to Sydney by Microsoft’s chief executive, who emphasized the transformative economic and societal potential of artificial intelligence.

Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese welcomed the move, describing it as a major step toward realizing the country’s national AI ambitions and strengthening long-term economic resilience.

A substantial portion of the funding will be directed toward building and upgrading data centre infrastructure across key locations, including Sydney, Melbourne, and Canberra.

These facilities are designed to support a new generation of AI-driven applications and services while ensuring secure and reliable data processing within Australia.

Cybersecurity forms a central pillar of the initiative.

Microsoft will expand its collaboration with Australian authorities through an enhanced Cyber Shield program, aimed at bolstering national defence against increasingly sophisticated cyber threats.

The partnership is expected to extend protections to additional government agencies and critical infrastructure, while deepening coordination with national security institutions.

Alongside infrastructure and security investments, Microsoft has pledged a sweeping national training effort to equip three million Australians with AI-related skills by 2028. The program, described as the largest of its kind in the country, will target workers, students, and educators, with a focus on preparing the workforce for widespread AI adoption across industries.

The initiative builds on earlier investments and aligns with Australia’s broader strategy to harness artificial intelligence as a driver of productivity and innovation.
