NSW MP Calls for Federal Inquiry After Being Named in Israeli Government Dossier Amid Foreign Interference Concerns

NSW MP Calls for Federal Inquiry After Being Named in Israeli Government Dossier Amid Foreign Interference Concerns

Anthony D’Adam urges Home Affairs Minister to probe potential foreign influence following publication of an Israeli Ministry report listing Australian politicians
A New South Wales parliamentarian has formally urged Australia’s federal Home Affairs Minister to investigate whether actions by a foreign government may constitute unlawful interference after he and other Australian political figures were named in a dossier compiled by an Israeli government ministry.

Anthony D’Adam, a member of the NSW Legislative Council and convener of Labor Friends of Palestine, wrote to Minister for Home Affairs Tony Burke on January 5, requesting a review of whether the publication and use of the document breaches Australia’s foreign influence and national security laws.

The dossier, published last September by Israel’s Ministry for Diaspora Affairs, characterises 25 individuals and organisations as promoters of antisemitic and anti-Zionist content, drawing on publicly available information and social media activity.

D’Adam, long known for his vocal criticism of Israeli government policy in Gaza and advocacy for Palestinian recognition, emphatically denied any engagement in antisemitism, asserting that the dossier conflates legitimate policy critique with hate speech and appears designed to intimidate political dissent.

He noted that the report labels politicians such as himself, Greens leader Adam Bandt, Greens senator Mehreen Faruqi and independent senators Fatima Payman and Lidia Thorpe as ‘‘political figures in office who promote antisemitism,’’ despite providing no substantiated examples of such conduct.

In his letter to Burke, D’Adam highlighted the potential national security implications, suggesting that individuals in Australia may have provided information to the dossier’s authors on behalf of a foreign government.

He urged the minister to determine whether any persons in Australia are acting as unregistered agents of foreign interests and whether any surveillance or influence activity has occurred.

The New South Wales MP described the report’s use by Australian media outlets as a politically harmful intervention in domestic political discourse and called for clear representations to be made to the Israeli government expressing Australia’s concerns.

Australia’s current foreign interference framework defines covert, coercive or clandestine activity by foreign governments that seeks to influence political rights or government decisions as illegal and a threat to national sovereignty and democratic processes.

The Department of Home Affairs and its Counter Foreign Interference Coordination Centre coordinate whole-of-government efforts to detect and counter such threats, with reporting mechanisms and penalties under Australian law for unlawful conduct.

A spokesperson for Minister Burke confirmed that correspondence alleging unlawful conduct is routinely referred to relevant security agencies for appropriate assessment.

Politicians and figures named in the dossier have been approached for comment, and the Home Affairs Department is reviewing the matter.

D’Adam’s request has ignited a broader conversation about the line between foreign government advocacy and interference in Australia’s political system, with national security experts underscoring the complexity of determining whether international commentary and reporting cross into interference.
