Spotify has moved to counter growing criticism from Australia’s music sector, defending the prominence of local artists on its platform as independent musicians rally behind a campaign urging listeners to boost homegrown talent.

The company released findings from a survey of more than 4,000 Australian users, arguing that domestic music remains widely accessible and appreciated despite concerns over declining stream share for local acts.

In its statement, Spotify said that four in five Australian users find it easy to discover local artists on the platform, with confidence levels even higher among younger listeners.

It added that most users are satisfied with the volume of Australian music available, positioning this as evidence that the platform is not deprioritising domestic talent.

The defence comes as the “Ausify Your Algo” movement gains traction, with independent artists urging fans to deliberately seek out and share Australian music to counter what they describe as a global algorithmic tilt toward international acts.

Industry data showing a falling proportion of streams going to Australian artists has deepened the debate, raising questions about whether streaming platforms are amplifying or eroding cultural diversity.

Spotify’s latest moves are widely seen as an attempt to pre-empt government mandates.

While no formal proposals for music-streaming quotas are currently active, the idea has surfaced repeatedly in policy discussions — especially after new rules requiring video-streaming platforms to invest more heavily in Australian content were introduced earlier this year.

The company’s public response signals its desire to demonstrate voluntary support for local creators before stronger regulatory measures emerge.

For now, Australia’s artists continue to press for meaningful change, arguing that voluntary gestures are insufficient without structural reform to ensure they remain visible and competitive in an increasingly globalised streaming ecosystem.
