Multiple tankers carrying ultra-low sulphur diesel have either arrived in Australia or are en route after departing from ports in Washington state and Los Angeles.

Shipping data indicates that more than 925,000 barrels are currently being transported on three vessels alone, following earlier deliveries of over 500,000 barrels.

In total, volumes shipped along this route in recent weeks are approaching levels equivalent to the previous six years combined.

The shift reflects a broader upheaval in global fuel markets triggered by conflict in the Middle East and the effective disruption of the Strait of Hormuz, a critical artery for oil exports.

With traditional supply chains constrained, fuel traders have been forced to redirect cargoes along longer and more expensive routes, including trans-Pacific journeys that would typically be considered uneconomic.

Australia, which imports the majority of its refined fuel and maintains relatively low domestic stockpiles, has been particularly exposed.

Diesel is essential for freight, mining and agriculture, making supply stability a strategic priority.

What is confirmed is that the country has increasingly turned to nontraditional suppliers, including the United States, which now accounts for a significantly larger share of imports than usual.

Government intervention has played a role in sustaining supply flows.

Authorities have underwritten purchases and sought alternative sourcing arrangements to ensure continued deliveries, even as global competition for fuel intensifies.

Recent shipments form part of a broader effort to secure cargoes from multiple regions, including the Americas and Asia.

Reduced output from local refining capacity and logistical challenges have tightened availability further, increasing dependence on imports arriving on time and at scale.
