Victorians Vote in Key Byelections that May Impact Federal Political Landscape

Elections in Werribee and Prahran are significant for Labor and the Greens amidst shifting voter sentiments.
Voters in Victoria are participating today in two significant byelections that may have implications for Australia's federal political future.

The byelections are taking place in the historically Labor-held seat of Werribee and the Greens seat of Prahran.

The resignation of former treasurer Tim Pallas has prompted the byelection in Werribee, a seat held by Labor since 1976. Labor candidate John Lister is contesting the seat, expressing his commitment to advocate for investments in the region.

His opponent, Liberal candidate Steve Murphy, contends that change is necessary, suggesting that electing the Liberal party is the way to achieve new outcomes for Werribee.

In the last state election, Pallas won Werribee with a primary vote of 45.36%.

Over in Prahran, the Greens candidate Angelica Di Camillo is working to retain the seat, which her party has held since 2014. Di Camillo has proposed policies including the introduction of highly subsidized public transport fares and capping rent increases, aiming to enhance the party’s local appeal.

Her opponent, Liberal candidate Rachel Westaway, has criticized Di Camillo for a lack of established ties to the community, arguing that her own experience equips her better to serve the constituents.

The byelection in Prahran was initiated following the resignation of former MP Sam Hibbins amid controversy regarding a personal affair.

Hibbins won the seat in 2022 with a primary vote of 36.40%.

Tony Barry, a communications director at RedBridge, a research and polling firm, noted that the Greens may face challenges in securing sufficient preferences to maintain their hold on Prahran, suggesting that they may require a primary vote of around 42 to 43% to be safe.

Barry remarked on the lingering impact of Hibbins' controversial departure, which may affect voter perceptions.

In the broader context, recent polling indicates that the Liberal Party leads Labor by 51% to 49% on a two-party preferred basis in Victoria.

Barry suggested that with ongoing concerns regarding Labor’s effectiveness and economic management, the Liberal Party has a chance to gain both seats today.

The outcome of these byelections is seen as a critical evaluation of the performance of Premier Jacinta Allan, who succeeded Daniel Andrews, and Prime Minister Anthony Albanese, as speculation about the timing of the federal election continues.

Recent polling data shows Albanese's popularity at 34%, trailing Opposition Leader Peter Dutton, who has 39%.

As of early voting reports, over 13,400 residents from both the Werribee and Prahran districts have participated.

Voting is scheduled from 8 AM to 6 PM today, with the counting of votes expected to commence shortly thereafter.
