Insurance Claims Surge Following Ex-Tropical Cyclone Alfred in Queensland

Over 41,000 claims filed as Queensland experiences widespread damage and federal disaster relief measures.
Insurance claims across south-east Queensland have surged following the impact of ex-Tropical Cyclone Alfred, with more than 41,000 claims filed to date.

The majority of claims pertain to residential property damage, alongside nearly 1,700 claims from commercial entities.

Jake Ellwood, chief executive of the Queensland Reconstruction Authority, indicated that varying challenges have emerged across different council areas.

Essential services have encountered significant difficulties in the aftermath of the storm.

To assist affected residents, the federal government is providing disaster recovery payments amounting to $1,000 per adult and $400 per child for those eligible in Logan, Gold Coast, Redland City, and parts of Fraser Coast, in addition to $180 state-distributed emergency hardship payments.

However, Brisbane, Moreton Bay, and Lockyer Valley have not been included in this assistance rollout despite severe flash flooding affecting numerous suburbs.

Brisbane’s Lord Mayor, Adrian Schrinner, reported instances of creeks overflowing and entering properties, along with flooding issues related to heavy rainfall causing leaks.

Federal officials are currently awaiting assessments of the damages before potentially expanding the relief areas.

In Southport on the Gold Coast, wind gusts during the storm were strong enough to break windows at a local restaurant, owned by Sidney Kin, who stated, "It was so scary, but no one was hurt.

We were lucky."

Gold Coast Mayor Tom Tate announced that approximately 18,000 residents remained without power as of this morning, while the energy company Energex aims to restore full services by Sunday.

Beaches at Greenmount, Coolangatta, and Burleigh have reopened today, although several others will undergo restoration before the upcoming Easter holidays.

Efforts are ongoing to manage recovery in the affected areas as authorities assess the full extent of the damage caused by ex-Tropical Cyclone Alfred.
