Australia has taken a decisive step in delivering its future nuclear-powered submarine capability by investing AU$310 million in long-lead reactor components for the first boats under the AUKUS security partnership.

The announcement was made by the Minister for Defence Industry during international defence discussions in London, underscoring Canberra’s commitment to enhancing its undersea deterrent and defence industrial base.

The funding will procure the earliest parts destined for nuclear reactors that will power the first two SSN-AUKUS attack submarines, which are to be constructed as part of Australia’s sovereign submarine programme in Adelaide later this decade.

The acquisition of these components represents a preparatory milestone ahead of full-scale submarine construction at the Osborne shipyard in South Australia, where Canberra plans to build a fleet of conventionally armed, nuclear-powered vessels in cooperation with the United Kingdom and the United States.

This investment follows a broader shift from diesel-electric to nuclear propulsion, a transformational leap for the Royal Australian Navy’s capabilities in the Indo-Pacific.

The announcement highlighted the industrial opportunity the programme presents, with the minister characterising it as a significant boost to high-skilled employment and local industry participation.

Officials noted that securing key reactor parts at this stage helps anchor early work in Australian industry and bolsters supply chain engagement with allied partners.

Visits to major UK defence manufacturers are planned to review progress on reactor and submarine systems that will ultimately be integrated into Australia’s future fleet.

The reactor components are expected to form part of the pressurised water reactor systems that power SSN-AUKUS submarines, designed to deliver long endurance, stealth and advanced capability.

The broader AUKUS framework envisages that Australia will progressively build its own nuclear-powered submarines domestically after interim acquisitions of allied platforms, with the first domestically assembled boats scheduled for delivery in the early 2040s.

Canberra’s investment in reactor parts comes alongside a major AU$3.9 billion funding commitment announced earlier to establish the Airbus-scale submarine construction yard at Osborne.

Together, these moves signal sustained momentum in the trilateral partnership’s efforts to establish Australia as a sovereign builder and operator of nuclear-powered submarines, a capability considered vital for strategic deterrence and regional security in an increasingly complex strategic environment.
