Finland Deploys Commercial-Scale Thermal Batteries Using Crushed Rock to Store Renewable Grid Energy

A 100-megawatt-hour thermal storage system in Pornainen has eliminated the municipal heating network's reliance on oil, as engineers test bidirectional power conversion.
The fundamental limitation of renewable energy is its intermittency, a vulnerability now being addressed by utility-scale thermal storage systems utilizing stationary aggregate materials.

What is confirmed is that a 13-meter-tall silo filled with 2,000 metric tons of crushed soapstone is currently functioning as the primary district heating plant for the Finnish municipality of Pornainen.

The infrastructure operates by absorbing surplus electricity from the grid—typically during periods of high wind or solar generation when spot prices are exceptionally low—and converting it through resistive heating to warm the internal crushed rock.

The soapstone, sourced as an industrial byproduct from fireplace manufacturing, is heated to temperatures between 500 and 600 degrees Celsius.

Because solid rock does not change phase or degrade under extreme heat, the insulated silo can retain thermal energy for weeks with minimal loss.

When municipal demand rises, cooler air is circulated through a closed-loop pipe network inside the battery, extracting the heat and transferring it into the local water-based heating grid.

The Pornainen installation delivers one megawatt of thermal power and holds a total storage capacity of 100 megawatt-hours.

Current operational metrics demonstrate the system supplies up to 60 percent of the town's heating requirements.

This deployment has completely eliminated the municipality's reliance on oil for district heating, reduced wood chip combustion by approximately 60 percent, and cut the network's carbon emissions by roughly 70 percent.

While the commercial viability of power-to-heat storage is established, engineers are now attempting to close the cycle by converting the stored thermal energy back into electricity.

A pilot initiative in the city of Valkeakoski is currently testing this bidirectional capability using steam turbines.

The development targets an electrical conversion efficiency of 30 to 35 percent, aiming to transform the silos into fully functioning power-to-heat-to-power batteries.

The immediate expansion of the technology involves scaling the storage capacity for larger municipal grids.

A definitive agreement has been executed to construct a 250-megawatt-hour facility in the Finnish village of Vääksy.

That installation will utilize 2,400 tons of natural sand as its thermal medium and is scheduled to commence operations in the summer of 2027.
