The federal response also includes accelerating efforts to establish a national firearms register and reinforcing hate crime legislation to ensure law enforcement can act effectively against extremists.

States, led by New South Wales, have moved rapidly to enact emergency legislation: the NSW Parliament approved the Terrorism and Other Legislation Amendment Bill which imposes strict firearm ownership caps, mandates gun club membership, increases police authority to restrict public protests for up to three months after declared terror events and criminalises the public display of symbols linked to banned militant groups.
