Schmidt responded with statistics of his own, noting that Australia had been involved in approximately 1,256 attacking rucks in the match and claimed there was ‘‘one yellow card and no one has left the field injured as a result of our clean-outs.’’ Australia captain Harry Wilson similarly dismissed the accusations, pointing out the team had engaged in more than two thousand rucks this year and arguing the level of scrutiny was misplaced given the volume of engagement.

Although England signalled their concern to match officials before kick-off, neither the referee nor officiating body applied any special sanctions during the game.

England’s statement of concern was confirmed to have taken place but not officially referenced by the match officials.

The breakdown dispute nonetheless will form part of the Rugby Football League’s review of the match, observers say.

From Australia’s perspective the focus now turns to rebounding ahead of their next Autumn Nations Series fixture.

Schmidt acknowledged his team was ‘‘feeling the effects of a hefty travel schedule’’—with a recent match in Japan before the England Test—but stressed that this was ‘‘not an excuse’’ for the performance.

England captain Harry Wilson and coach Steve Borthwick were unavailable to comment further on the breakdown issue.

The incident underscores growing tensions over breakdown law enforcement in international rugby and the high stakes around bench strength, pace and front-foot play.
