After more than twenty-five months of pioneering operations in Earth orbit, Australia’s SpIRIT nanosatellite mission has formally concluded, marking a milestone in the nation’s space science and industry capabilities.

The Space Industry Responsive Intelligent Thermal (SpIRIT) satellite, led by the University of Melbourne in collaboration with the Italian Space Agency and supported by the Australian Space Agency, was designed to test advanced spacecraft technologies and conduct high-energy astrophysics research in orbit.

Over the course of its mission the shoebox-sized 6U CubeSat completed roughly sixteen thousand orbits and traversed an extraordinary six hundred and ninety million kilometres — a distance comparable to the span from Earth to Jupiter — before its operations were brought to a close after its platform began experiencing anomalies and intermittent communication loss early in January 2026. During its lifetime SpIRIT exceeded its original two-year design life, downlinking more than four hundred images and capturing hundreds more for onboard edge-computing research.

The mission showcased innovations in autonomous operations, communications, thermal management and electric propulsion systems developed by Australian industry partners and researchers, and hosted the HERMES high-energy instrument supplied by Italy to detect cosmic gamma-ray bursts and X-ray phenomena.

The satellite recorded more than one hundred and eighty hours of high-energy astrophysics data in the final months of 2025, advancing understanding of powerful cosmic explosions and demonstrating the effectiveness of compact scientific payloads.

Principal Investigator Professor Michele Trenti described SpIRIT’s performance as an extraordinary achievement for the mission team and partners, emphasising the project’s contribution to space science and engineering expertise.

Leaders from the Australian Space Agency and the Italian Space Agency noted the mission’s role in strengthening international cooperation and growing Australia’s reputation as a reliable contributor to space missions.

With contact no longer reliably restorable, the on-orbit phase of SpIRIT has officially ended; the spacecraft will gradually descend and is expected to burn up harmlessly in Earth’s atmosphere around August 2026, leaving a rich archive of data for scientists worldwide and informing future generations of space technology development.
