Australia’s federal government has introduced a temporary easing of national fuel quality standards in an effort to strengthen domestic supply during a period of severe global energy disruption.

The measure allows petrol with slightly higher sulphur levels than normally permitted to enter the market for sixty days, enabling refiners and importers to redirect additional fuel into the country’s distribution system.

Energy Minister Chris Bowen announced the adjustment as a practical response to mounting pressure on fuel availability across parts of the country.

The temporary rule change is expected to inject around one hundred million litres of petrol into the Australian supply chain, helping stabilise deliveries and easing pressure particularly in regional communities where shortages have been reported.

Under the plan, the Ampol refinery in Lytton, Queensland, will be permitted to produce petrol above the usual sulphur threshold.

Fuel originally intended for export to markets with less stringent quality standards can now be redirected domestically.

Officials emphasised that, even with the temporary modification, the petrol will still meet broadly accepted international standards.

Authorities say the step is designed to address immediate logistical strain rather than a fundamental collapse in supply.

Several regional towns have reported service stations running low on diesel and petrol as demand surged.

In some locations, retailers have introduced purchase limits to preserve supplies for essential users such as emergency services and transport operators.

The pressure on Australia’s fuel system has intensified amid turmoil in global oil markets linked to conflict in the Middle East.

Disruptions affecting shipping routes through the Strait of Hormuz — a passage that carries roughly one-fifth of the world’s oil trade — have sharply driven up energy prices and complicated supply chains for fuel-importing countries.

International benchmark oil prices have surged beyond one hundred dollars per barrel in recent weeks, fuelling concerns about inflation and supply disruptions worldwide.

For Australia, which imports a large share of its refined petroleum products, these shocks have reverberated quickly through the domestic market.

In response, officials have also coordinated with international partners through the International Energy Agency to support the release of strategic oil reserves intended to cushion global supply pressures.

National authorities have urged motorists not to engage in panic buying, warning that sudden surges in demand can worsen local shortages even when broader supplies remain stable.

Regional sectors that rely heavily on diesel — including agriculture, fishing, and freight transport — have been among the most affected by the tightening supply environment.

Industry groups have warned that persistent shortages could disrupt food production and logistics if deliveries do not stabilise.

The temporary relaxation of fuel standards is expected to remain in place for two months while authorities monitor market conditions.

Officials say further measures could be considered if global disruptions persist or domestic distribution challenges intensify.
