Basketball Coach Arrested on Multiple Sexual Abuse Charges in Queensland

Donald Robert McCarron faces allegations of grooming and raping a child over several years.
A basketball coach from Mango Hill, located north of Brisbane, has been arrested and charged with multiple serious offenses including the grooming and sexual abuse of a child.

Donald Robert McCarron, 67, was taken into custody by Queensland Police on January 19, following a tip-off from the public regarding his alleged actions.

According to police reports, McCarron is accused of using his position as a coach for the Northside Wizards to abuse the young victim over a four-year period, from 2013 to 2017. The allegations include seven counts of rape, two counts of sexual assault, and one count of grooming a child under the age of 16.

The investigation is part of a broader operation, named 'Operation Xray Modern', which aims to address serious offences against children.

Detective Senior Sergeant Peter Lunney has urged anyone with further information or potential victims to come forward, emphasizing the importance of support for individuals who have experienced sexual violence.

During a court appearance at the Brisbane Magistrates Court, McCarron was granted bail with several conditions, including an evening curfew, mandatory reporting to police, and a restriction on international travel.

The case has been adjourned until February 17, 2024, for further proceedings.

This situation has raised concerns within the community about child safety and the responsibilities of adults in positions of authority.

The allegations remain under investigation as authorities continue to seek any additional witnesses or victims related to McCarron’s actions.

In an unrelated incident, a 13-year-old student in northwest Adelaide was struck by a car that allegedly left the scene after the incident.

The girl, a Seaton High School student, described being hit by a vehicle after she crossed the road shortly after exiting a bus.

Eyewitnesses provided assistance, including qualified medical personnel who stopped to help until emergency services arrived.

The young victim was hospitalized with injuries, including a fractured pelvis.

Authorities have arrested a 68-year-old woman, the alleged driver, who has since been charged with leaving the scene of an accident, failing to exercise due care, and failing to report a collision.

She has been issued an immediate loss of driving privileges and is due to appear in Port Adelaide Magistrates Court on March 25, 2024.

Furthermore, police in Sydney are investigating a suspected hate crime involving a well-known drag queen, Dan Varon Villamil, also known as Gothic Marika.

The 26-year-old reported being verbally and physically assaulted while walking in the Milsons Point area.

Villamil documented parts of the incident on social media, drawing attention to the need for safety and community vigilance against hate crimes.

Law enforcement agencies across Australia continue to encourage individuals who experience or witness these types of incidents to report them promptly, stressing the importance of community awareness and support.
