Canada’s Prime Minister Mark Carney is set to embark on a high-level diplomatic mission to India, Australia and Japan from February twenty-six to March seven, reflecting Ottawa’s commitment to strengthening partnerships across the Indo-Pacific region.

The tour will begin in India with official engagements in Mumbai and New Delhi, where Mr Carney is scheduled to meet Prime Minister Narendra Modi to discuss ambitious economic and strategic cooperation, including trade expansion, energy security, technology and defence collaboration.

This visit marks the first standalone Canadian prime ministerial trip to India in nearly eight years and comes amid efforts to relaunch formal negotiations on a Comprehensive Economic Partnership Agreement aimed at boosting bilateral trade.

The agenda in India is expected to extend to a range of sectoral agreements encompassing critical minerals, artificial intelligence and civil nuclear cooperation, as Canada seeks to diversify its export markets beyond the United States.

Following India, Mr Carney will visit Australia, where he is slated to engage with Australian leaders, including Prime Minister Anthony Albanese, and address the parliament in Canberra, reinforcing shared interests in trade, investment and regional security.

His itinerary then takes him to Japan to meet Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi, further consolidating ties with key Pacific partners committed to a rules-based international order.

The three-nation tour underscores Canada’s broader Indo-Pacific strategy of deepening economic links and strategic cooperation with dynamic Asian economies, positioning Ottawa as an active contributor to regional stability and prosperity.

Throughout the mission, discussions are expected to advance not only commercial and technological cooperation but also coordination on defence and talent exchanges, reflecting a multifaceted approach to partnership building in the region.
