Australia is confronting a severe bushfire emergency as an intense heatwave in the southeast has spawned dozens of major blazes, destroyed homes and left tens of thousands without electricity.

Torrid conditions with temperatures exceeding forty degrees Celsius and strong, dry winds have created some of the most dangerous fire weather in years, particularly in the state of Victoria and neighbouring New South Wales.

Authorities say more than three hundred thousand hectares of bushland have burned and scores of structures, including homes, farms and vineyards, have been razed as fire fronts spread rapidly through rural landscapes.

The crisis has eclipsed typical seasonal fire activity and forced emergency responses on a massive scale.

In Victoria, Premier Jacinta Allan declared a state of disaster across multiple local government areas, granting fire crews greater authority to manage evacuations and emergency operations.

At least ten major fires remain active, with emergency-level warnings in place for communities such as Longwood, Ravenswood, Harcourt and Walwa.

Around thirty separate fire events are still uncontained, prompting total fire bans statewide and widespread shelter and evacuation directives.

Thousands of residents have been urged to leave threatened areas while others are sheltering as flames approach or pass through their towns.

The conflagrations have inflicted extensive damage on infrastructure.

Officials report that approximately thirty-eight thousand homes and businesses in Victoria and parts of New South Wales are without power as fire-damaged networks and hazardous conditions delay repair efforts.

Emergency services, supported by interstate and national resources including the Australian Defence Force, are working to restore services and support affected residents, with financial hardship payments and relief centres established to assist displaced families.

Although a southerly weather change is forecast to ease temperatures somewhat, authorities caution that volatile conditions remain and that major fires could burn for days or weeks, especially in the absence of significant rainfall.
