Australia is in the grip of a widespread and intense heatwave, with meteorologists forecasting temperatures as high as forty-seven degrees Celsius in some inland areas as the sweltering conditions spread across multiple states.

The severe heat is part of what authorities describe as the most significant heatwave since the Black Summer of 2019–20, driven by a high-pressure system channelling hot air across the continent and elevating fire danger warnings in vast districts of South Australia, Victoria and New South Wales.

More moderate but still extreme heat is also expected in capital cities and surrounding regions.

In South Australia’s far north, towns such as Port Augusta are forecast to approach forty-seven degrees, while Ceduna and Murray Bridge have already endured temperatures above forty-five degrees.

The state’s intense heat is prompting high to extreme fire danger ratings across almost all districts, with emergency services urging residents to prepare for hazardous conditions as dry vegetation and strong winds compound the risk.

In Victoria, inland centres such as Hopetoun and Walpeup have recorded temperatures in the low-forties, with large swathes of the state under heat warnings and total fire bans.

New South Wales is also experiencing extreme heat, particularly in its western regions, where temperatures in towns like Hay have soared above forty-four degrees.

Forecasts indicate that the heat will persist through the week, pushing temperatures well into the forties across northern Victoria and eastern South Australia before spreading towards the east coast.

Sydney is expected to see temperatures near forty-three degrees later in the week, while in Melbourne the mercury could reach the high-thirties to low-forties.

Western Australia and Tasmania are not immune, with broad areas already under heatwave conditions that exceed long-term averages.

Across the affected states and territories — including the Australian Capital Territory and parts of the Northern Territory — officials have issued heat warnings, emphasising precautions such as staying hydrated, avoiding strenuous outdoor activity during peak heat and checking on vulnerable community members.

The extreme heat arrives amid concerns about fire danger, infrastructure strain and health impacts, with emergency services and health authorities urging the public to heed warnings and stay prepared as conditions develop further.
