Japan and Australia have deepened their defence cooperation in response to an increasingly complex security environment in the Indo-Pacific, reflecting shared strategic interests and intensifying regional tensions.

In recent high-level consultations, ministers from both countries reaffirmed a Special Strategic Partnership that has matured over decades, building on foundational agreements such as the Reciprocal Access Agreement, which facilitates greater interoperability between the Japan Self-Defense Forces and the Australian Defence Force.

Australia’s Defence Minister Richard Marles and Japan’s counterparts emphasised expanded joint training, exercises and planning as essential to deterring coercive actions in contested maritime domains.

The expanded cooperation encompasses not only operational coordination but also defence industrial collaboration.

A landmark deal saw Australia select Japan’s Mogami-class frigate design for its next generation of general-purpose warships, a major step in bolstering Canberra’s naval capabilities and supply chain integration.

This naval partnership reinforces both nations’ abilities to project power and respond to shared threats.

Trilateral engagements with the United States further underscore the strategic alignment, with joint exercises like Orient Shield and Talisman Sabre bringing together personnel and capabilities from all three democracies to practise complex multi-domain operations.

Formal declarations by Canberra and Tokyo underscore a commitment to deepening dialogues at all levels, including annual reciprocal leaders’ meetings, defence and foreign ministerial consultations and enhanced intelligence sharing.

These frameworks aim to strengthen deterrence through practical cooperation on maritime security, cyber policy, space operations and humanitarian assistance, while upholding a rules-based regional order.

The partnership reflects broader concerns about unilateral attempts to alter the status quo and underscores a mutual resolve to preserve peace, stability and lawful freedom of navigation in the Indo-Pacific, even as both countries continue to align their defence strategies with regional allies and partners.
