In recent months and years, both grassroots initiatives and established groups have urged Jews to prepare to protect themselves and their communities as traditional reliance on external security is tested by a series of attacks and threats.

The debate has gained urgency following several high-profile antisemitic incidents, including a mass shooting targeting Jews on Bondi Beach, Australia, where authorities and world leaders characterized the attack as antisemitic, and similar assaults on Jewish targets elsewhere that have underscored vulnerabilities in public safety systems.

In the United States, Jewish gun clubs and self-defense advocates report growing interest in personal firearms ownership and training.

Membership in organizations such as the New York State Jewish Gun Club and other regional shooting clubs has increased significantly, and some leaders have publicly defended the right to carry arms for community protection, arguing that Jews should not be “soft targets” in the face of violence.

The discussion is not limited to firearms: Jewish communities are also embracing unarmed self-defense methods such as martial arts.

In New York City, enrollment in krav maga classes has surged, with participants saying they want to be able to defend themselves physically amid a climate of heightened fear following attacks and unrest post-October 7. Likewise, college students and others have organized self-defense courses on campuses.

The rise in self-defense interest reflects broader social and historical concerns.

Antisemitic incidents across the United States have reportedly tripled in the period since the October 7 attacks on Israel, prompting Jewish leaders and security experts to stress the need for improved safety measures during community events and holidays.

Jewish commentators and authors have framed organized self-defense training and responsible firearm ownership as part of a renewed emphasis on self-reliance rooted in historical experience.

Not all voices in the Jewish community agree on the role of weapons in self-defense, and some caution that the spread of arms must be balanced with legal and ethical considerations.

At the same time, a consensus is emerging that enhanced preparedness — whether through armed response, trained civilian guards, or disciplined self-defense practices — is a pragmatic response to a landscape of persistent antisemitic threats and violence.
