NSW Government Defends Harbour Bridge Toll Increase Amid Ongoing Construction

NSW Government Defends Harbour Bridge Toll Increase Amid Ongoing Construction

Tolls on the Sydney Harbour Bridge will rise by 3.2% to fund toll relief measures as ongoing Warringah Freeway upgrades continue.
The New South Wales (NSW) government has announced a 3.2% increase in tolls for the Sydney Harbour Bridge, set to take effect from July 1. This adjustment will see motorists paying $4.41 for southbound trips during peak periods, which represents an increase of 14 cents.

The off-peak day rate will rise by 10 cents to $3.30, while evening tolls will see a 9-cent increase to $2.76.

Transport Minister John Graham has defended the toll hike, asserting it is necessary to fund the government’s $60 weekly toll cap, primarily benefiting motorists in western Sydney utilizing roads managed by Transurban.

The cost of a weekday peak hour return trip from Blacktown to Sydney's central business district (CBD), using routes including the M7, M2 Lane Cove Tunnel, and the Harbour Bridge, has increased from $12.72 in 2009 to $38.03 in 2023.

Graham emphasized the need to ensure that tolls contribute to funding initiatives that provide relief to drivers, stating, "That toll relief is making a big difference to people’s pockets, but we need to fund it, and this money will go straight into that." He highlighted that tolls on other crossings will also increase, contributing to a uniform approach across the city.

This marks the second toll increase on the Harbour Bridge since 2009, following a 6.8% rise implemented shortly after the announcement of the toll cap in 2023. Graham remarked that previous administrations had not adjusted tolls on the bridge, leading to an imbalance in toll obligations among different regions.

Motorists have been facing significant disruptions due to the ongoing Warringah Freeway upgrade, which has been in progress since 2022 and is anticipated for completion next year.

The upgrade aims to facilitate the future opening of the Western Harbour Tunnel in 2028, which is projected to reduce travel time by approximately 20 minutes for journeys from North Sydney to Sydney Olympic Park.

Local officials, including Mosman councillor Roy Bendall, have criticized the toll increase, arguing that it unfairly impacts their community while subsidizing toll relief measures that predominantly benefit western Sydney.

Bendall described the increase as a “theft” from his residents, asserting that they had already paid off the Harbour Bridge in the 1980s.

He expressed concerns that constituents would feel betrayed given the disruptions caused by the freeway construction, stating, "We are being billed for our suffering."

The Warringah Freeway upgrade is also intended to support the development of the Beaches Link tunnels, which were planned to connect Balgowlah and Seaforth to North Sydney, ultimately linking with the Western Harbour Tunnel.

However, this project has been scrapped by the Minns government, which has labeled it as “irresponsible.”
