OX2 Advances Renewable Ambitions with Major Wind and Storage Play in Western Australia

Swedish developer acquires co-located wind farm and battery storage projects north of Perth, marking a significant step in Australia’s energy transition
Global renewable energy developer OX2 has taken a decisive step into Western Australia by acquiring a major wind farm and battery energy storage system (BESS) development in the Dandaragan Shire, north of Perth.

The acquisition aligns OX2’s Australian portfolio with its broader ambitions and supports the state’s shift toward low-carbon electricity.

The wind farm, branded the Dinner Hill Wind Farm, is designed to deliver approximately 1.2 gigawatts of capacity across 32,500 hectares in the Hill River and Badgingarra localities.

OX2 expects to begin construction in 2029, with operations targeted for 2032. The wind farm will connect to the 330 kV Neerabup–Eneabba transmission line and is co-located with the Harvest Battery Energy Storage System project.

The Harvest BESS is planned on a 1,630-hectare site in Hill River, northeast of Badgingarra, and will feature a 100 megawatt capacity with four hours of storage duration.

Construction is anticipated to start in 2028 and operations begin in 2029, subject to environmental and grid-connection approvals.

OX2 emphasises the regional economic benefits of the developments, highlighting local investment, employment opportunities during construction and operations, and community benefit programmes developed in partnership with Traditional Custodians and the Dandaragan Shire Council.

Stephen Symons, Vice-President of OX2 Australia, described the pair of projects as central to “supporting Australia’s renewable energy transition and regional economic development.”

The transaction follows OX2’s broader Australian growth following its acquisition by capital group EQT in late 2024. The company now claims a portfolio of over 3 gigawatts of solar, wind and storage across multiple Australian states.

OX2 entered the Australian market in 2023 via the acquisition of solar energy developer ESCO Pacific and has since shifted into on-shore wind and storage.

While the specific sellers were not publicly disclosed, the original developers will remain involved in managing approval processes under the acquisition agreement.

OX2’s entry into Western Australia highlights the state’s attractiveness for renewables, driven by outstanding wind and solar resources, grid connection opportunities, and government commitments to achieve high renewable-energy shares.

Together, the co-located wind and storage projects reinforce the evolving model of paired renewable generation and battery flexibility, which grid operators say is necessary to integrate variable power at scale.

If successful, the Dinner Hill Wind Farm and Harvest BESS could become flagship assets in Australia’s energy-transition landscape and signal growing global capital flows into the region’s renewables sector.
