Prime Minister Allocates Over $100 Million for Queensland Flood Recovery Efforts

Prime Minister Allocates Over $100 Million for Queensland Flood Recovery Efforts

New funding aims to assist flood-affected communities with livestock and infrastructure support.
Prime Minister Anthony Albanese has announced more than $100 million in funding dedicated to assisting communities in Western Queensland that have been significantly impacted by recent flooding.

This initiative aims to provide critical support to both residents and the agricultural sector in the region.

The announced funding includes $7 million specifically earmarked for the provision of new fodder for livestock, responding to the considerable agricultural losses experienced.

An additional $105 million has been allocated for the construction of new fencing intended to protect remaining livestock from threats posed by feral pigs and dogs.

Albanese highlighted the profound distress faced by residents of Western Queensland in his statement, emphasizing the ongoing challenges many communities are enduring.

"There are some smaller communities that are still inaccessible," he stated, underlining the severity of the flooding that has led to substantial displacement.

Reports indicate that in total, more than 140,000 head of livestock have been lost or killed due to the disaster, significantly impacting local farmers and the agricultural economy.

Some areas remain cut off from essential supplies and emergency services due to floodwaters.

In recent weather updates, rainfall in the region has decreased, transitioning from triple-digit totals to lower levels; however, creeks and rivers continue to swell as water drains towards Lake Eyre, known as Kati Thanda-Lake Eyre, which is located approximately 600 kilometers southwest of Windorah.

The lake, which sits at the lowest natural point in Australia, generally remains dry for most of the year.

The small town of Adavale experienced rapid flooding last week, prompting an evacuation to the nearby town of Quilpie, with residents facing an uncertain timeline for returning home while authorities work to assess and clear damages.

The Bureau of Meteorology forecasts that a weak trough will linger over central and northern Queensland before moving northward over the weekend, suggesting that the region may still experience fluctuating conditions in the immediate future.

Albanese has reported close collaboration with Queensland Premier David Crisafulli throughout this crisis, reflecting a coordinated effort to address the challenges posed by what has been described as a once-in-a-generation flooding event.
