Australia’s competition regulator has granted interim approval allowing Qantas and American Airlines to continue their deep commercial cooperation across key trans-Pacific routes, preserving stability for business and leisure travel between Australia and North America.

The decision enables the two carriers to maintain coordinated operations linking Australia and New Zealand with the United States, Canada and Mexico while regulators complete a detailed review of their proposed long-term alliance.

The interim measure ensures that existing services, flight planning and passenger arrangements remain unaffected during the assessment period.

The partnership, structured under a revised joint business agreement, allows the airlines to align schedules, manage seat inventory, share revenues and coordinate marketing strategies across their combined network.

This level of integration effectively allows the carriers to operate as a unified commercial entity on some of the world’s busiest long-haul routes.

Regulators moved to grant temporary authorisation ahead of the expiry of the current approval in mid-April, citing the need to avoid disruption to forward planning and ticket sales for flights scheduled beyond that date.

The interim arrangement will remain in force while authorities evaluate whether to grant a renewed authorisation, which the airlines have requested for a further five-year period.

The alliance has been credited with strengthening connectivity across the Pacific, supporting new routes and improving scheduling options for passengers.

Enhancements such as expanded services between major hubs and integrated frequent flyer benefits have been positioned as key advantages of the partnership.

At the same time, the regulator’s ongoing review will weigh these benefits against potential impacts on competition, given the significant market share held by the two airlines on Australia–United States routes.

A final determination is expected later this year following further consultation and analysis.

For now, the interim approval provides continuity for airlines and travellers alike, ensuring that one of the most strategically important aviation corridors remains stable and well-coordinated during a period of regulatory scrutiny.
