Ealaf Al-Easawi, a childcare worker in Melbourne, experienced a violent incident while shopping in October 2023, when a woman allegedly assaulted her.

The attack left Al-Easawi shaken, prompting her to avoid venturing outside alone for the past month.

Her experience is a reflection of a troubling trend in Australia, marked by a reported increase in Islamophobia incidents.

According to the Islamophobia Register Australia, which has documented incidents since 2014, there has been a significant rise in reported Islamophobic acts.

Their latest report, covering 2023 and 2024, indicates that in-person incidents of Islamophobia have more than doubled over the last two years.

The organization verified 309 such incidents in person and an additional 366 incidents online, the highest record since its inception a decade ago.

This data included 139 cases from New South Wales and 79 from Victoria.

The report categorized the incidents primarily as verbal intimidation and harassment, comprising 61% of the reports.

Other reported incidents included discrimination (9%), physical assaults (9%), property damage (8%), non-verbal harassment (7%), and written intimidation such as hate mail (6%).

Notably, the report documented severe cases, including physical assaults leading to hospitalizations, an arson attack, and acts of vandalism targeting mosques.

Muslim women and girls represented the majority of victims, accounting for 75% of reported incidents.

Personal accounts shared with the register illustrated the severity of these incidents, with one woman recounting being spat on while walking with her children, receiving an offensive remark as justification.

This surge in reported Islamophobia coincides with rising social tension in Australia, particularly following the Hamas attack on Israel on October 7, 2023, and the subsequent conflict in Gaza.

The Scanlon Foundation Research Institute's social cohesion index, which surveys over 8,000 Australians annually, revealed a year-on-year increase in negative attitudes towards Muslims, with 34% reporting such sentiments as of July 2024, up from 27% in the previous year.

The political discourse surrounding Islamophobia has evolved in complexity.

Following the October 2023 events, Australian Labor politicians initially condemned both antisemitism and Islamophobia in tandem.

However, there was a noticeable shift in rhetoric as criticism emerged regarding government responses to antisemitic incidents, some of which were linked to organized crime.

Opposition figures have leveraged these tensions to question the government's handling of issues surrounding Islamic communities.

Despite the polarized political climate, the report indicated that many Australian Muslims find the political narrative confusing and alienating, feeling that their documented experiences of hate crimes are being minimized or dismissed for partisan purposes.
