Socceroos Secure Qualification for the 2026 FIFA World Cup with 2-1 Victory Over Saudi Arabia

Australia's national team triumphs in a tense match in Jeddah, guaranteeing their sixth consecutive World Cup appearance.
The Australian national football team, known as the Socceroos, has officially qualified for the 2026 FIFA World Cup following a hard-fought 2-1 victory against Saudi Arabia in Jeddah.

This win marks the team’s sixth consecutive appearance in the World Cup and came under intense conditions at the King Abdullah Sports Complex.

The Socceroos needed only to avoid a significant defeat to secure qualification, having previously beaten Japan, which put them in a strong position going into the match.

They faced an early challenge when Saudi Arabia took the lead in the 19th minute with a goal from Abdulrahman Al-Obud, who finished a well-placed effort following a strong run from Salem Al-Dawsari.

Despite the setback, the Socceroos responded before half-time.

Connor Metcalf equalized with a goal on the cusp of 45 minutes, cornering a pass from Mitch Duke to score his first international goal.

Just after half-time, Duke himself scored from a glancing header, giving Australia a 2-1 lead and silencing the home crowd.

In a game filled with tension, Saudi Arabia continued to press for an equalizer.

They were awarded a contentious penalty in the 82nd minute after a challenge by Jason Geria on Al-Dawsari.

Mat Ryan, marking his 100th appearance for the national team, made a crucial save to deny Al-Dawsari's penalty attempt, thereby preserving the Socceroos' lead.

Throughout the match, Saudi Arabia maintained a higher percentage of possession and created several opportunities, but the Socceroos' defense held firm, aided by Ryan's experience and skill.

Following their difficult start to the qualifying round, having garnered only one point from their first two matches, the Socceroos have now remained unbeaten in their last eight matches since Tony Popovic took over as head coach.

Popovic’s tenure has been characterized by strong performances against top Asian teams, including the recent victory over Saudi Arabia and earlier successes against China and Japan.

The win against Saudi Arabia solidifies their place in the tournament scheduled to take place in June and July 2026, co-hosted by Canada, Mexico, and the United States.

With this result, the Socceroos conclude their qualification campaign, having secured automatic qualification by finishing second in Group C behind Japan, who topped the group.
