Thousands of Doctors in New South Wales Strike Amid Pay Disputes

Doctors across the state engage in industrial action, leading to significant disruptions in medical services.
Thousands of doctors in New South Wales (NSW) have commenced a three-day strike, prompting warnings from the state government regarding the potential for disrupted healthcare services.

The protest, organized by the Australian Salaried Medical Officers Federation (ASMOF), has resulted in the cancellation of various specialist appointments and the postponement of hundreds of elective surgeries.

Emergency departments and intensive care units are reported to be operating with staffing levels akin to those seen on public holidays.

Although paramedics will remain on duty during the strike, the New South Wales Health Department anticipates increased wait times for non-urgent medical issues as a result of the reduced number of practicing physicians.

Patients with elective surgeries scheduled in the coming days are advised to confirm the status of their procedures with healthcare providers, given the uncertainty surrounding medical staffing.

NSW Health Minister Ryan Park has voiced concerns over patient safety amid the strike, stating, "You simply cannot have thousands of doctors threaten to walk off the job and out of hospitals and not have an impact on patient care." However, ASMOF officials have indicated that emergency and intensive care units will maintain safe staffing levels throughout the protest.

ASMOF Executive Director Andrew Holland confirmed that their members are committed to ensuring a safe environment for patients, despite the anticipated operational challenges.

The underlying cause of the strike relates to ongoing negotiations for pay equity, with ASMOF seeking a pay increase of up to 30 percent to align with compensation in other Australian states.

The New South Wales government has proposed a 10 percent salary increase, leading to a stalemate in discussions that have lasted more than nine months.

Matthew Daly, Deputy Secretary of NSW Health, expressed concern over the uncertainty surrounding the number of doctors participating in the strike, noting that the situation complicates risk management for patient care across the state's healthcare facilities.

ASMOF representatives criticized the government's response, stating that the first direct communication from the health minister occurred only last week, despite the prolonged duration of the negotiations.

The union has described this as "too little, too late." During the strike, patients requiring emergency care are encouraged to visit emergency departments directly.
