Prince William Delivers Tribute to Australia’s Naval Alliance Amid Renewed Royal Spotlight on the Country

The Prince of Wales honors the shared naval heritage of Britain and Australia as Prince Harry and Meghan Markle prepare for their first return to the country in seven years.
Prince William has delivered a message of recognition and partnership to Australia, praising the enduring military cooperation between the United Kingdom and its Commonwealth ally, days after Prince Harry and Meghan Markle confirmed plans to visit the country next month.

In a video recorded at Windsor Castle, the Prince of Wales marked the 125th anniversary of both the Royal Navy Submarine Service and the Royal Australian Navy.

Speaking in his capacity as Commodore-in-Chief of the Royal Navy Submarine Service, he highlighted the deep historical ties linking British and Australian forces and paid tribute to generations of personnel who served together in major conflicts and ongoing missions.

"As HMS Anson visits Australia, I would like to wish a very happy 125th birthday to both the Royal Navy Submarine Service and the Australian Navy," William said in the message.

He recalled the shared sacrifices of sailors and submariners who supported the United Kingdom, Australia, and their Commonwealth partners during the two World Wars and in the decades that followed, thanking those who continue that tradition of service today.

The statement coincided with the visit of HMS Anson, a British nuclear-powered submarine, to Western Australia as part of ongoing operational cooperation between the two nations.

William also emphasized the importance of the AUKUS partnership — a major trilateral security collaboration linking Australia, the United Kingdom and the United States — describing it as a powerful example of modern strategic cooperation.

His message arrived shortly after Prince Harry and Meghan Markle announced they would travel to Australia in mid-April for a series of private, business and philanthropic engagements.

The visit will mark their first return to the country since their widely attended 2018 tour, which took place shortly after their wedding while they were still working members of the royal family.

Representatives for the Duke and Duchess of Sussex confirmed that the trip will include events in cities such as Sydney and Melbourne.

Meghan is expected to headline a wellness retreat event in Sydney, while Harry is scheduled to address a psychosocial safety summit in Melbourne focused on workplace wellbeing and mental health.

The couple’s children, Prince Archie and Princess Lilibet, will not accompany them on the visit.

Harry and Meghan now reside in California and have undertaken several international trips since stepping back from their official royal duties in 2020.

The renewed attention on Australia has underscored the country’s continuing place within the broader Commonwealth network and its deep military, cultural and historical ties with the United Kingdom.

William’s message, focused squarely on cooperation and service, highlighted the long-standing partnership that continues to shape defense collaboration and diplomatic relations across the region.
