A government-established Royal Commission into antisemitism and social cohesion is now entering its first full public hearings phase, marking a shift from preliminary findings to direct testimony about violence, discrimination, and security failures in Australia.

The hearings, beginning in Sydney, follow the release of an interim report that examined the December 2025 antisemitic terrorist attack at Bondi Beach, where 15 people were killed during a Hanukkah event.

The commission, led by former High Court justice Virginia Bell, has been tasked with investigating both the attack itself and broader patterns of antisemitism across Australian society.

What is confirmed is that the interim report identified no immediate legal barrier that would have prevented the attack under existing laws.
