The leadership of Australia’s Liberal Party is undergoing a significant transition following the historic defeat of Peter Dutton, the first opposition leader in the country’s history to lose his own seat.

Angus Taylor, 58, who was the shadow treasurer prior to the election, has emerged as a notable contender, albeit with some criticism regarding his role in the party's recent campaign struggles.

He has a Master's in Philosophy from Oxford and has previously held ministerial positions in Scott Morrison's cabinet.

However, his participation in the unsuccessful campaign may weigh against him in the leadership contest.

Andrew Hastie, at 42, is another emerging candidate known for his military background, having served as a captain in the Australian Army and command roles in the Special Air Service (SAS).

He currently holds the position of shadow defence minister and has garnered support from some members within the party, particularly those from Western Australia.

Dan Tehan, representing the seat of Wannon in Victoria, is also seen as a potential candidate.

Acknowledged for his previous roles in cabinet, including as the minister for education and shadow minister for immigration, he retained his seat in a competitive race during the recent federal election.

Ley has stated that the party must wait for final election results before holding a leadership ballot, as several seats remain subject to preferential counting.
