Australia has appointed a dedicated fuel coordinator to manage mounting supply pressures triggered by escalating conflict in the Middle East, as the government moves to safeguard domestic energy stability during a period of global disruption.

The newly created role has been tasked with overseeing fuel logistics, coordinating industry responses, and advising on emergency measures to address supply chain strain and rising costs linked to the conflict involving Iran.

The appointment reflects the government’s effort to centralise decision-making at a time when volatility in global oil markets is directly affecting Australia’s fuel availability.

The move follows a sharp escalation in disruptions across key international shipping routes, particularly the Strait of Hormuz, a critical corridor through which roughly one-fifth of the world’s oil supply typically passes.

Reduced tanker traffic and heightened security risks have constrained flows of crude oil and refined fuels, sending prices higher and complicating supply chains across Asia and beyond.

Australia’s reliance on imported fuel has amplified the impact.

With around ninety percent of its fuel needs sourced from overseas, primarily through Asian refineries, any interruption to regional supply chains has immediate domestic consequences.

As those refineries struggle with reduced crude availability, downstream markets such as Australia are facing tightening supply and rising prices.

The government has already taken steps to ease pressure, including releasing portions of national fuel reserves and relaxing stockholding requirements to improve distribution flexibility.

However, officials have acknowledged that sustained disruption could place additional strain on transport, agriculture, and critical infrastructure sectors.

Recent weeks have seen fuel prices surge nationwide, while isolated shortages and increased costs have affected businesses and regional communities.
