Australia’s involvement in the escalating conflict involving Iran will remain strictly defensive, senior government officials have said, as the crisis in the Middle East raises concerns about wider regional escalation.

Australian ministers have reiterated that the country will not participate in offensive military action against Iran and will not deploy ground troops into the conflict.

Instead, Canberra has focused its role on defensive support aimed at protecting partner nations in the Gulf and safeguarding Australians living and working across the region.

Prime Minister Anthony Albanese’s government has authorized the deployment of a limited number of Australian Defence Force personnel and surveillance capabilities to the United Arab Emirates, responding to requests from Gulf partners facing missile and drone attacks.

The deployment includes an E-seven A Wedgetail airborne early-warning aircraft and a small contingent of defence personnel to help monitor airspace and strengthen regional air defense.

Officials say the mission is intended to assist allied nations in defending themselves and to ensure the safety of Australians overseas.

More than one hundred thousand Australian citizens live across the Gulf region, including tens of thousands in the United Arab Emirates, making the protection of civilians a central consideration in Canberra’s planning.

Foreign Minister Penny Wong has emphasized that Australia is not taking part in the offensive operations conducted by the United States and Israel against Iranian targets.

Instead, she described the country’s role as part of a broader effort of collective self-defence by nations that have come under Iranian missile and drone attacks.

The government has also ruled out deploying Australian troops directly to Iran or participating in combat missions.

Officials have stressed that any military assistance provided by Australia will remain limited to defensive activities designed to deter attacks and protect infrastructure and civilian populations.

The conflict has already prompted significant diplomatic and economic concerns in Australia.

Rising oil prices linked to disruptions in the Persian Gulf have heightened fears of inflationary pressure, while the government has worked to help Australians stranded in parts of the Middle East return home.

Although Canberra maintains close security ties with the United States and other Western allies, officials have repeatedly stated that Australia is not seeking a broader military role in the war.

The government says its priority remains the protection of Australians abroad, support for regional partners facing attacks, and efforts to prevent the conflict from expanding further.
