A rapidly intensifying Tropical Cyclone Narelle is bearing down on northern Australia, with authorities warning of life-threatening conditions as the system approaches landfall in far north Queensland.

The cyclone strengthened into a category five system over the Coral Sea, reaching the highest level of intensity on the Australian scale.

Forecasts indicate it will strike the coast between Lockhart River and Cape Melville, bringing destructive winds, heavy rainfall, flash flooding, and dangerous storm surges.

Meteorological assessments suggest wind gusts could exceed three hundred kilometres per hour at peak intensity, placing communities in the direct path at risk of widespread structural damage, prolonged power outages, and significant disruption to transport and communications.

Emergency preparations have accelerated across the Cape York Peninsula, where evacuations of vulnerable residents and tourists have been carried out, schools have been closed, and emergency personnel have been deployed.

Authorities have urged those remaining in affected areas to seek immediate shelter and remain in place as conditions deteriorate.

Officials have described the system as potentially one of the most severe weather events in living memory for parts of the region, highlighting the narrow window for final preparations before landfall.

The cyclone’s arrival is expected to coincide with high tide, increasing the risk of coastal inundation and compounding the threat posed by storm surge.

After crossing the Queensland coast, the system is forecast to weaken temporarily over land before reintensifying over the Gulf of Carpentaria.
